What if you have your XBMC system connected to a projector and want to
listen to music? The problem I wanted to solve was that my
audiovisual system worked great for video, but not so well for music.
Having to drop the projector screen each time you want to
listen to music was impractical and meant that we rarely listened to
music.
The mini-ITX board (ION or SandyBridge) has a variety of outputs, but
of note is the fact
that there is both an HDMI and a DVI output. The amp (which
has the projector as it's output) is connected to the HDMI port, but
what
about connecting a much smaller screen to the DVI?
After some research I opted to spend $200 on a Lilliput 869glt - this
little monitor had everything that I wanted and had a unique feature I
hoped to use - a touchscreen!
As you can see, the little screen tucked in nicely inside my system
component area. It comes with sticky tabs on the mounting bar
- just leave the protective covering over the tabs and drill 4 holes
instead - it won't stay upside down for long otherwise.
What we have pictured is the Lilliput screen in an inverted
position on the upper left, my HTPC is on the top right, and my amp is
on the bottom.
Here you can see both screens in action. It may seem like a
lot of media devices but each has it's purpose and normally all three
are not on at the same time. All controlled via a Logitech
Harmony 880.
- Movies - are watched on the projector screen at
night. You can stream movies via the XBMC interface, or watch
them from the Blu-ray player. Not only do you get to enjoy
the movie on an 84", 16:9 widescreen projector (Benq W500 - 720p,
Elitescreens Spectrum Electric Screen), I also have a 7.1
surround setup (Onkyo TX-SR606) which enveopes you in the sounds of the
movie.
- TV - is watched on the LCD during the day - you
have plenty of light and it's easy on the eyes. Nothing
fancy, just a 55" TV.
- Audio - the small Lilliput screen is used to
drive the audio capabilities of XBMC - all of your CD's/MP3's at your
fingertips, easily accessible from the small 8" screen.
- (optional) Using the 2 port HDMI splitter you
can easily run the same 1080p signal from the amp (which has a single
HDMI out) to both the projector and TV. Even though this
makes the cable run to the projector longer, the powered splitter
delivers enough juice to push the signal that far with no impact.
This is a great HDMI splitter that is reasonably priced.

So...how to get this working in Ubuntu?

You can download the 32/64-bit Linux drivers and follow the simple
setup script.
As you can see below, the settings are for 720p (1280x720). I
was unable to get the Lilliput to output 1080p (1920x1080).
As it
turns out, the problem was actually with the input settings.
If
you have the Lilliput set to DVI, then the highest resolution available
is 720p; if however you set the input of the Lilliput to HDMI then you
can achieve 1080p. The only problem is the Lilliput seems
unable
to scale a 1080p down quite small enough to fit so the upper and lower
parts of the screen are cut-off. Not a huge problem, as your
actual watching of the program will be just fine on the TV or
projector. I have presently have my system running 1080p and
will
update the below screenshots and xorg.conf sometime when I get time.
I was unsuccessful in getting the touchscreen portion to work in XBMC.
By installing the driver, I was able to get the touchscreen
to work in Ubuntu, however it wasn't the most accurate of devices.
Update:
Well, my Lilliput screen bit the dust (text was mirrored).
Looking it up online, it sounded like a fuse had blown - so I
popped the screen apart (voiding the warranty) and it wasn't the fuse.
As it turns out, coollcd.com warrants the product for 2
years, so I could have covered it under warranty - IF I hadn't taken it
apart. Lesson learned. The screen was replaced with
a similar screen, the COOLLCD 819AH 8" LCD.
